Dear Fellow Democrats:

The North Carolina Democratic Party has a number of tools to help you fight the health care smears that are being passed around. 

First, the White House has posted today a Reality Check website to get the facts about health care reform. The website has short videos that directly confront many of the false claims those opposed to health care reform are making. Take a few minutes to watch these videos and be sure to reference it any communications your local party does.

Second, think of responding to these baseless attacks with some verbal jujitsu –1) Hit 2) Discredit 3) Pivot to positive message

Here’s an example:

Ronny Republican: Health care reform will result in euthanasia for elderly Americans.

You (Hit): There is no euthanasia –period.

(Discredit): Let’s just remember, these are the same people who tried two years ago to privatize Social Security

(Pivot): Health reform provides coverage you can count on. You will still be covered even if you lose your job. Health insurance companies can’t deny you coverage if you get sick. Your costs won’t go up even if you work for a small business.

Third, you can also volunteer for a number of events from letter-writing campaigns to local office visits to congressmen to share your story. Contact Jon Lucas at jlucas@ncdp.org for more information.

Remember, Republicans want health care reform efforts to fail because if it does, it means they will have a smoother ride in next year’s mid-term elections and it makes it more difficult for President Obama to win re-election in 2012.

The stakes are high, but they will always be when it comes to health care. Reform efforts failed in 1993 and we have watched our health care costs triple in 16 years. We literally cannot afford to step in the same river twice.
