How's your new Cost-Of-Living Adjustment (COLA) for 2008? My neighbor Irene says she can't understand why the government calls it a cost-of-living adjustment when it doesn't remotely cover the increase in her cost-of-living.
As usual, Irene hit the nail on the head. That's because the COLA doesn't cover seniors cost of living. It's based on the increase in costs experienced by younger working people instead. How fair is that?
Dear NC Senior Democrats:
Social Security was born during Franklin Roosevelt’s Administration following the “great depression”. Civil Rights Legislation came out of John F. Kennedy’s leadership while the Voting Rights Act followed soon thereafter. Medicare was born out of LB Johnson’s Vietnam Era after an unpopular war where we took major troop losses
Health Care Reform was born under the leadership of President Barack Obama during a time when Republicans thrust the American people into a time of unrest with a war in Iraq, a failed economy and an emerging global market. All these issues were born out of necessity.
History shows these historical issues came under the guidance of Democratic Leadership. We are now immersed in the global markets and that forces us to spend lots of money in updating our way of doing business. Changes always costs no matter what. We cannot continue to do business as usual.
Dear North Carolina Senior Democrats,
Over the weekend, we made history. By a vote of 220 to 215, the House passed the Affordable Health Care for America Act. By passing this bill, the House of Representatives stood up for your needs over powerful special interests in Washington.
North Carolina has 13 house members, 8 Democrats, and 5 Republicans. Five out of eight democratic congressional representatives voted for Healthcare Reform on the floor Saturday night. They were Representatives G.K.
Butterfield # 1; Bob Etheridge # 2; Brad Miller # 13; David Price # 4 and Mel Watt # 12.
Representatives Larry Kiss ell # 8; Mike McIntyre # 7 and Heath Shuler # 11 seem to have their own agenda. They gave no explanation as to why they voted against reform. These people just gave the North Carolina Republican Party a big edge. Numerous attempts have been made by telephone to ask these representatives why their vote went astray. No answers have been received. We should have had all eight Democrats voting in favor.
When Larry Kissell ran for office, he said he would be a voice for hard working families and would resist pressure from multi-national corporations and stand with everyday North Carolinians. He vowed to protect us from
corporate greed and we need to hold him to that promise.
From Representative Larry Kissell’s Newsletter Oct 28, 2009:
I hope to soon be able to report that Congress has passed legislation to help seniors by correcting the lack of cost of living adjustments to Social Security. There is significant support for giving a $250 one-time allowance for seniors to help weather this recession. The checks would benefit 57 million seniors. This check would be equivalent to a two percent increase for most Social Security retiree recipients. It will help bridge the gap for most seniors as they struggle with no COLA adjustment this year. It is important that we do what we can to help this most vulnerable community.
About 44 million Americans are Medicare beneficiaries. About 80% are now receiving health care services through the traditional Medicare program according to the Alliance for Retired Persons. The rest of Americans, about one in five (8.7 million) receive care through Medicare Advantage (MA) plans.
